UK aubergines are just starting and we are pleased to have some from Alderton Nursery to offer alongside the Spanish ones this week.
The aubergine is known by many different names like eggplant, mad-apple (the Latin is melalonga, literally "mad apple"), brinjal and garden egg.
Like, tomatoes, the aubergine is actually a fruit, and a member of the nightshade family.
Originally from South East Asia, now grown all over the world, and features in a myriad of dishes. Try it roasted, grilled, barbequed, steamed, stuffed or blitzed in a dip.
