Peru is blessed with 60% of the global genetic diversity of cocoa trees and in the past 10 years increased cocoa exports have helped drive new economic growth. Sited in the Alto Huayabamba region in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon, the Acopagro Cooperative has been bringing together small producers for more than 15 years, enabling them to move out of cocaine production and into cocoa.
UNOCACE COOPERATIVE: Acopagro involves members of 70 local communities, such as Luis (pictured), a producer from the Pucalpillo community. Thanks to new production methods and the benefits of fair trade, this Coop has converted to organic growing and has planted new cocoa trees. With its own fermentation centre, it’s a pioneer in the field of reforestation and environmental conservation
