This small star-shaped pod is from an evergreen tree of the magnolia family from China. The flavour is reminiscent of liquorice and is used as an ingredient of Chinese 5-spice. It is commonly used in biryani and masala chai all over the Indian subcontinent. It is widely used in Chinese cuisine and in Malay and Indonesian cuisines.
It's fun and challenging to cook with what's available and the produce is so much fresher than anywhere else. Our family loves them!
